Sound // Silence

Friday 9th March

This deeply quietening Yin yoga workshop, in the warmth of the Kula studio, will focus on sound and silence – softening with gravity into lovely deep hip postures sitting or lying down.
We will explore the Liver/Gall Bladder Meridian and Manipura Chakra focus for early spring. This relates to self-esteem, sense of purpose, personal identity, individual will, digestion and metabolism.
During the first half of the workshop we will tune into our bodies, learn how to create vibrational breath through Sound and work with healing Mudras, which when performed allow tension to be automatically released. The second half of the workshop will be Silent which helps us connect to our ‘Nada’ or inner sounds as we meditate. Silence allows us to notice thoughts and feelings that may be deeply rooted in the unconscious, when we notice thoughts we then have the freedom to make conscious choices and begin to learn how to trace thoughts and feelings in the body rather than getting lost and overwhelmed in our busy minds.

Long-held Yin Yoga poses allow us to connect with our subtle body and rejuvenate the natural strength, length and lustre of our connective tissues (fascia), that may have been lost due to aging, diet, stress or lifestyle. This connective tissue focus, combined with mindful muscle relaxation promotes the healthy flow of Qi (life force/energy) within the body, bringing balance to mental, physical and emotional health.

This workshop will also explore two distinct pranyama techniques which lead us into a meditative state.

All are welcome and there will be tea and cake afterwards.

What my classes are like
My classes aim to help students find mental and physical balance and stability with a focus on alignment and breathing. I also like to incorporate deeply meditative and grounding practices to calm and nourish the body.

My journey into yoga
I discovered and fell in love with yoga as a teenager; my first teacher was an inspirational Iyengar Yoga teacher who helped me form a dedicated practice. Since then I’ve maintained a regular practice to keep the balance and energy in my life whilst being a parent, a teacher and to cope with the everyday stresses and strains of modern life that we all have.

My study and credentials
I became 200-hour qualified yoga teacher back in 2008 with Brian Cooper at Yoga Alliance and later became a Chartered Level 2 qualified teacher. I’ve also learnt Ashtanga with Tim Feldman and Yin Yoga with Liz Stephenson-Payne which has broadened my perspective on the possibilities and philosophy of yoga.
I have been very lucky to study with the founder of the Yin Meridian approach to yoga; Sarah Powers and take part in a 5 day Yoga Alliance certified Yin immersion with Norman Blair. I will continue developing my anatomical knowledge with Julie Gudmersall and embark on a yoga intensive with the International teacher Donna Farhi. I also plan to expand my interest in Nada (sound meditation) with an introduction to sound therapy with Kath Reade.
